Parents
Apart
(For Kids' Sake) is
a fast-paced four-hour seminar that is offered in the
Houston/Galveston area of Texas. The program is taught by two
mental health professionals with expertise in child custody,
parenting, impact of divorce on children as well as the dynamics of
high conflict and domestic violence. A published Parent
Handbook, slides, videotaped segments, role plays and hypothetical
situations keep participants actively engaged and maximize their
learning. A published
parent handbook,
slides, videotaped segments, role plays and hypothetical
situations keep the participants actively engaged and maximize
their learning. Topics covered include adults' and
children's responses to marital separation, research findings on
the impact of divorce on children and common parental
pitfalls. The emphasis, however, is on what parents can do
proactively to circumvent negative consequences for their
children. Post-divorce parenting relationships along a
continuum from parallel parenting to cooperative parenting are
presented. Although designed for heterogeneous groups, all
aspects are sensitive to domestic violence issues.
Evaluation results have been overwhelmingly positive regardless of
whether participants attend on a voluntary or involuntary
basis.
